What do you love about being over 40?

First, I love my graying hair. It’s the outward-facing, softer look that mirrors how I've become more gracious towards myself and others, living gracefully. I listen better to others and myself, embracing perspectives I've gained through experiences. I make time for quiet contemplation, as well as for appreciation of beauty and art. I’m shedding impostor syndrome, with less need to prove myself and feel more confident taking risks. Time is precious; I endeavor to make it count.

How do you stay fabulous?

Each day I work at being intentional. I read voraciously and daily. I started learning French. I keep physically active and love to be in nature. I seek inspiration in unlikely places. During the pandemic, I saw an interview with Judi Dench that inspired me to learn about champagne, and this year took a class with a master sommelier. For my fiftieth birthday I went to Amsterdam to see a once in a lifetime Vermeer exhibit, just because his paintings speak to me. I write a poem every week.

What would you do with the $40,000?

Recently, I left a job in academia to focus on writing. My brother passed away from cancer in 2019, and I am writing a memoir about us, among other projects. I also work in narrative medicine, which brings writing and storytelling into healthcare spaces, collaborating with patients, caregivers, and health professionals. The prize would help me continue to do both these, sharing not only my stories, but the stories of others in difficult situations. I also want to collect art by local artists.
