Katie DeBonville

At 49 I earned a degree in creative writing and now, at 51, I’m pursuing what I love and making my own rules. I’m in charge of me!

What do you love about being over 40?

The world has fewer expectations of women over 40. This frees me up to have more expectations of myself. I’m no longer expected to do conventional things like get married or have children. I can be unconventional and set my own expectations. I expect to write a book, because I want to and because I have the talent to do so. I expect to travel, because there’s a world out there waiting for me to observe it, to drink it in, to write about it. I love that my expectations belong solely to me.

How do you stay fabulous?

Honestly, I allow myself lapses. For the most part, I take care of myself. I have a personal trainer who kicks my ass on a weekly basis and is cheaper than therapy. I’ve grown to like cooking but recognize the value in a good plate of cheese fries. I have friends who let me know I’m loved but aren’t afraid to tell me when I’m overthinking, or overreacting, or just plain being a bitch. I stand up for what I believe in, speak my mind, and am a good listener. And I always wear fabulous shoes!

What would you do with the $40,000?

My mother and I are currently planning a trip to Scotland next year; after paying off my educational bills, I would use some of the money to help pay for this trip, one we have been contemplating for years. I’ve spent my career working in fundraising for the arts, so it’s a given that I would use some of the money philanthropically to support the organizations that mean the most to me. I would also use the prize to finish my essay collection and explore the possibility of self-publishing it.
