Diane Karagienakos

I’m 60. My mother died when she was 50. Every precious moment I’m alive, I’m living for the two of us; for the years she didn’t get to live.

What do you love about being over 40?

There’s an acceptance/appreciation for the self that comes when you realize who you are: all the selves (yourself as a child, teen, adult; daughter, sister, mother, etc.) have merged to form this one whole, unique woman, who is greater than the sum of her “parts.” And it’s quite all right if not everyone likes you. What matters is that you like you. That confidence and self-respect inspires others.

How do you stay fabulous?

Physically, I am active every day, take long walks with my dog, and and have been vegan for 7 years, avoiding processed foods. Having friendships and other relationships, and volunteering, keep my heart healthy.

What would you do with the $40,000?

I plan to launch my vegan baklava retail business. The recipe is based on my yia yia’s — even my brothers and Greek cousins can’t tell the difference!
