Hit the reset button on life after losing everything in a fire and again getting diagnosed with lupus and finally thriving on my own
We would like to thank you for supporting Betsy Gulinson in this year's competition. Your support helps us contribute to the National Breast Cancer Foundation who provides early detection, education, and support services to those affected by breast cancer.
I finally hit my stride in life. In my 30s, I had just gotten a divorce, gotten diagnosed with lupus, and was floundering as a newly disabled person, dealing with workplace discrimination bouncing from job to job. The trauma of my thirties set me up to reap the blessings in my 40s. I was no longer nervous performing at job interviews. I learned to use my disability as a superpower. I learned to work twice as fast so my absences were never felt. I got my life back.
How do you stay fabulous?Self care. Every weekend is a day for doing things and a day for rest. I go to cryotherapy to reduce my inflammation. I get my mani-pedi even if I’m the only person who will see it. I give myself permission to say no to the things that don’t serve me. I take naps without shame. I embrace my alone time and focus on being the most authentic version of myself untainted by the expectations and demands of the world.
What would you do with the $40,000?I would donate the money to organizations that help people with invisible disabilities find and keep gainful employment because for many their prognosis is tied to their income and their insurance.
